Al bijna 3 jaar verdiep ik me in dit onderwerp en elke dag leer ik om er beter mee om te gaan. De inzichten van de afgelopen jaren hebben ervoor gezorgd dat ik mezelf veel beter ken, dat ik echt trots kan zijn op wat ik tot nu toe heb bereikt en vooral dat ik ook beter vooruit durf te kijken. Vroeger vond ik het lastig om een toekomstplan voor mijn carrière te hebben. Ik dacht dat ik overal toevallig was ingerold en ik het dus eigenlijk niet zelf in de hand had. Nu weet ik; mijn succes heb ik aan mezelf te danken, ik bepaal welke kant ik op ga, ik heb de regie over mijn eigen carrière!

Imposter syndrome speelt in op verschillende gevoelens; gevoelens van falen, je niet op je plek voelen, dat je leven is gebaseerd op geluk en niet een eigen verdienste en last but not least dat het succes dat je hebt behaald niet echt bijzonder is…
De druk om niet te falen ligt bij mensen met imposter syndrome extra hoog, vooral de angst om ontdekt te worden als je niet aan de verwachting voldoet. Gek genoeg is succes ook een angst, want dat brengt nog meer druk op die verwachting. Dit zorgt ervoor dat succes vaak wordt weggewuifd.
Wat ik vooral niet wil is je ont-imposteren. Je kunt het wat mij betreft omarmen! Het maakt wie je bent, je kunt er alleen wel slimmer mee omgaan zodat het je kan helpen in plaats van tegenhouden.
Daarom hieronder 6 tips die je verder helpen.
Denk eens terug aan die fijne zomervakantie, je kunt de zonnebrand al bijna ruiken en je krijgt meteen een vrij en blij gevoel.. je gevoel maakt de herinnering. Hierdoor kunnen onze herinneringen en dus ervaringen ook gekleurd worden. Dat je een negatief gevoel hebt gekoppeld aan een herinnering maakt het een vervelende ervaring. En zo zal je er in de toekomst ook naar handelen. Zo vergeet je vaak wat er feitelijk is gebeurt. Wat helpt is het maken van een feitenlijst.
Maak een lijst die je ergens kunt ophangen of als screensaver op je telefoon kunt zetten. Schrijf hierop wat jouw feitelijke successen en prestaties zijn; diploma’s, sportprestaties, cursussen, promoties, functies en allerleis andere persoonlijke mijlpalen. Laat je gevoel er buiten, verzet je tegen de stem die zegt “zo bijzonder was dit niet,…” Kijk af en toe naar die lijst. Dit zijn de feiten, jouw prestaties zonder extra gevoel van minderwaarde of oordeel. Herinner jezelf daaraan zo vaak je kunt.
Een ander tip is om te denken als een atleet. Veel atleten hebben momenten van imposter gevoelens. Zoals Serena Williams, zij vergeleek zichzelf continue met haar zus waardoor ze het gevoel had dat ze niet haar eigen leven aan het leiden was maar dat van haar zus. Haar eigen successen voelden niet goed genoeg en vooral niet als haar eigen verdienste.
Basketballer Michael Jordan heeft een trucje om zijn eigenwaarde en succes te bevestigen. Hij zegt elke dag zijn eigen naam hardop, soms in de spiegel. Het klinkt misschien gek, en je moet ook zeker niet ineens over jezelf beginnen te praten in de derde persoon, maar je eigen naam horen en hardop zeggen kan je echt helpen!
Door je eigen naam hardop te horen versterk je onbewust je eigen gevoel van bestaansrecht.
Praat met elkaar. We weten dat veel mensen last hebben van imposter gedachtes maar het gevaar bij imposter syndrome zit hem juist in het internaliseren van deze gedachtes. Dat maakt dat je kan denken; “niemand heeft door dat ik niet goed genoeg ben,…”
Terwijl, als je erover praat met vrienden, familie of collega’s zul je merken dat het delen van verhalen al enorm helpt! Daarnaast zullen anderen je kunnen vertellen dat de gedachtes die je hebt, vooral alleen dat zijn; jouw gedachtes. Niet de waarheid.
Als je echt de wortel van jouw imposter gevoelens wilt aanpakken, ga dan eens na: waarom voel je dit? Je kunt dit onderzoeken door goed naar jezelf te luisteren. Wanneer heb jij hier last van, wat voor situaties zijn dat? Herken je dit soort situaties van vroeger? Welke mensen zijn daarbij betrokken? Wat voel je dan precies? Wat is jouw reactie op die gevoelens?
Bijvoorbeeld; mijn gedachte was vaak “ik ben teveel, ik moet me aanpassen aan de rest” Vroeger ging dit vooral over rustig doen, onopvallend, want opvallen is niet goed. Dit veranderde van niet willen opvallen naar geen vragen durven stellen en al helemaal niet durven om ideeën te opperen.
Tijdens mijn carrière speelde ik daardoor altijd mijn ideeën 1-op-1 via andere collega’s bij wie ik dit wel durfde. Zo kwam ik indirect toch steeds verder. Dit is uiteindelijk het begin van mijn imposter syndrome geweest. Ik ging zo namelijk verder in mijn carrière zonder echt mijn ideeën te ownen. Ik speelde het namelijk allemaal via via. Hierdoor creëerde ik een stemmetje van twijfel of ik wel hoorde op de plek waar ik zat en of mijn ideeën wel goed genoeg waren.
Door uit te zoeken waar jouw imposter gedachtes vandaan komen kun je ook beter bedenken hoe je er vanaf komt.
Word je zenuwachtig van fouten? Ben je een perfectionist? Bedenk dan hoe erg vind jij het als iemand anders een fout maakt. Hoe erg is het als iemand zegt: “dat ga ik even uitzoeken, ik kom hier later op terug”
Dat vind je vast niet erg toch? Niet iedereen kan alles direct al weten. Hoe kun je anders leren?
Laat je angst voor fouten je niet weerhouden te groeien en nieuwe dingen te proberen. Het klinkt makkelijker dan gezegd, maar van je fouten kun je leren,… maar dan moet je ze wel durven maken 😉
Als laatste; vier je succes! Zeg hardop wat jij hebt bereikt, pak je feitenlijstje erbij, zeg je naam hardop en own jouw leven! Dat is niet opscheppen, zet je er overheen, dat is in je volle kracht staan.
